How to Play Gin Rummy
Each player holds 10 cards. On your turn, draw from the stock or the discard pile, then discard one card, building melds in your hand as you go.
Melds and knocking
- A meld is a set (three or four of a kind) or a run (three or more in sequence in one suit).
- Deadwood is any card not in a meld; face cards count 10, aces 1.
- Knock when your deadwood totals 10 or fewer to end the hand.
- Go Gin — zero deadwood — for a 25-point bonus.
Laying off
When you knock without Gin, your opponent may lay their deadwood onto your melds to lower their own count.
Strategy & Tips
- Keep low-value cards early so a forced knock costs you less.
- Hold cards that work two ways — one that could complete either a run or a set.
- Watch the discard pile and avoid feeding cards your opponent is clearly collecting.
- Knock early when you're ahead, but hold for Gin when your deadwood is already tiny.
- Beware the undercut — if your opponent matches or beats your knock, they take the bonus.
