How to Play Rummy
Each player is dealt a hand (10 cards for two players, 7 for three or four). On your turn, draw a card, optionally meld and lay off, then discard one card.
Melding
- A set is three or four cards of the same rank; a run is three or more in sequence in one suit (aces low).
- Lay off cards onto any meld on the table — once down, melds belong to everyone.
- End your turn by discarding a card to the pile.
- Win the round by getting rid of all your cards.
Going Rummy
If you shed your entire hand in one turn without having melded earlier, you go 'Rummy' and your score for the round is doubled.
Strategy & Tips
- Meld and lay off early to reduce the cards — and the points — in your hand.
- Keep cards that reach toward more than one possible meld for flexibility.
- Avoid discarding cards that obviously extend an opponent's visible melds.
- Track the discard pile to judge which runs and sets are still available.
- Going Rummy doubles your score but is risky — weigh it against being caught holding cards.
