How to Play Backgammon
Each player has fifteen checkers that move in opposite directions around 24 points. Roll two dice and move your checkers by those amounts, racing them all into your home board.
Moving
- Move a checker the number shown on each die; rolling doubles lets you play four moves.
- You can't land on a point held by two or more enemy checkers.
- Land on a lone enemy checker (a 'blot') to hit it and send it to the bar.
- Once all your checkers are home, bear them off; the first to bear off all fifteen wins.
Strategy & Tips
- Make points in your home board to block your opponent and trap hit checkers.
- Avoid leaving blots where your opponent can hit them.
- Build a 'prime' of consecutive points to wall in enemy checkers.
- Race when you're ahead; play a holding game when you're behind.
- Use doubles aggressively — four moves can transform your position.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to bear off?
Removing your checkers from the board once all fifteen are in your home board. The first player to bear off all of them wins.
What is a blot?
A point with a single checker on it. If your opponent lands there, your checker is hit and sent to the bar to re-enter.
What happens on doubles?
You play the rolled number four times instead of twice — a big swing if you can use them all.
Is Backgammon free to play?
Yes — free, with no sign-up or download, against the computer.
