Play Reversi (Othello) Online — Free
Reversi — also known as Othello — is the elegant disc-flipping game: place a disc to trap a line of your opponent's, flip them to your colour, and finish with the most discs on the board. Easy to learn, deep to master. Play Reversi free against the computer.
How to Play Reversi
Players take turns placing discs on an 8x8 board. Every move must outflank at least one line of the opponent's discs, which then flip to your colour.
Playing
- Place a disc so that one or more enemy discs are trapped between it and another of your discs.
- All trapped discs, in every direction, flip to your colour.
- If you can't make a flipping move, you pass your turn.
- The game ends when the board is full or neither player can move.
Winning
Whoever has more discs of their colour when the game ends wins.
Strategy & Tips
- Grab the corners — they can never be flipped and anchor your whole position.
- Avoid the squares next to an empty corner; they often hand your opponent the corner.
- Having fewer discs in the midgame is frequently good — it keeps your options open.
- Limit your opponent's available moves to force them into bad squares.
- Think about flips two moves ahead; a big flip now can backfire later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Reversi the same as Othello?
Yes — Othello is a standardized version of Reversi, and the disc-flipping rules are the same.
How do you win Reversi?
Finish with more discs of your colour than your opponent once no more moves are possible.
Why are corners so important?
A disc in a corner can never be flanked or flipped, so corners are permanent and very powerful anchors.
Is Reversi free to play?
