How to Play Mahjong
Tiles are stacked in a layout. Find two matching tiles that are 'free' and remove them as a pair, working down through the stacks until the board is clear.
Matching tiles
- A tile is free if nothing sits on top of it and at least one long side (left or right) is open.
- Match two free tiles of the same design to remove them.
- Flower tiles match any flower, and season tiles match any season.
- Clear every tile from the layout to win.
Getting stuck
Some layouts can dead-end. Use a shuffle or undo, or restart if no matching pairs remain.
Strategy & Tips
- Always free the tiles blocking the largest stacks first.
- Look for matches that open up the most new tiles.
- Don't remove a pair if a more useful pair needs those tiles uncovered.
- Work the long rows from the ends inward.
- Scan the whole board before each move — the obvious match isn't always the best.
