Minesweeper is a game about reading numbers, and it is honest about something Sudoku never has to admit: sometimes the logic runs out and you have to guess.

How to play Minesweeper

The grid hides a fixed number of mines. Clicking a square reveals what is under it, and there are three possibilities:

Your first click is always safe, so you can open anywhere to begin. Often it lands on an empty square and clears a substantial region, which gives you numbers to work from.

The five actions

  1. Open a square — left-click.
  2. Flag a mine — right-click. A marker appears.
  3. Mark a question mark — right-click again, for squares you suspect but are unsure about.
  4. Clear a mark — right-click once more; the states cycle mine, question mark, clear.
  5. Chord — click a numbered square whose adjacent mines are all already flagged, and every remaining neighbour opens at once. If the flags do not match the number, nothing happens, which protects you from your own mistakes.

Winning

Open every square that does not contain a mine. Flagging is not actually required — if you clear all the safe squares, the remaining mines are flagged automatically and you have won. Flagging is a tool for your own bookkeeping, and skipping it is a legitimate way to shave seconds off a time.

Strategy

Minesweeper is a sequence of small local deductions, and there are only a few that you need.

Subtract the flags you have already placed

The core operation: take a numbered square, subtract the mines already flagged around it, and the result is how many mines remain among its unopened neighbours. When that result reaches zero, every remaining neighbour is safe — chord it and move on.

When the number equals the unopened count, they are all mines

The mirror image of the same logic. A 3 with exactly three unopened neighbours means all three are mines. Flag them without hesitating; this is where most of your certain information comes from.

Learn the 1-2-1 pattern

Three consecutive numbers reading 1-2-1 along a wall or an opened edge have a fixed solution: the mines sit under the two 1s, not the 2. The related 1-2-2-1 pattern resolves the same way. Recognising these instantly rather than deriving them each time is most of the difference between a slow player and a fast one.

Work the edges and corners

Squares on the border have fewer neighbours — five along an edge, three in a corner — which makes their numbers far more constraining. When the middle of the board is ambiguous, the edges usually still have deducible squares left.

Clear everything deducible before you guess

Some positions are genuinely 50/50 and no amount of thinking resolves them. The right response is to postpone: open every square you can prove is safe first, because the information from those squares sometimes eliminates the guess entirely. When you truly must guess, prefer a corner or edge square, where the odds are usually slightly better.

Variants

Where Minesweeper came from

The lineage starts with Cube, written by Jerimac Ratliff in the early 1970s, and its clearer ancestor Mined-Out, released by Quicksilva in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum, in which the player crossed a minefield using proximity warnings. The direct ancestor of the modern game is Relentless Logic — often called RLogic — written for MS-DOS in 1985, which already had the grid, the numbers and the deduction.

The version everyone knows was written by Robert Donner and Curt Johnson at Microsoft and shipped with the Windows Entertainment Pack in 1990, then bundled with Windows 3.1 in 1992. Like Klondike Solitaire, it had an ulterior purpose: Solitaire taught users to drag with a mouse, and Minesweeper taught them to left- and right-click precisely. It stayed in Windows until Windows 8 removed it in 2012, by which point it had a serious competitive scene — world records on the Expert board now sit under 30 seconds. The game also has a genuine theoretical footnote: in 2000 Richard Kaye proved that the Minesweeper consistency problem is NP-complete, which means deciding whether a given board configuration is even possible is as hard as any problem in that class.

What do the numbers in Minesweeper mean?
Each number tells you exactly how many of that square’s eight neighbouring squares contain a mine. A 1 has one mine touching it; a 3 has three. That is the only information the game gives you.
Is the first click always safe?
Yes. The board is arranged so your opening click never hits a mine, which means you can start anywhere. It often opens a large empty area and gives you the numbers you need to begin deducing.
Do I have to flag all the mines to win?
