How to Play FreeCell
FreeCell has four free cells (top-left), four foundations (top-right), and eight tableau columns. All cards are dealt face-up, so the entire puzzle is in front of you from the first move.
Moving cards
- Build the tableau columns down in alternating colours (a red 6 on a black 7).
- Each free cell holds a single card of any kind — a temporary parking spot.
- Send cards to the foundations by suit, Ace to King.
- You can move a run of cards at once as a shortcut; the more empty free cells and empty columns you have, the longer the run you can move.
- Any card may be moved onto an empty column.
Strategy & Tips
- Plan several moves ahead before you touch a card — FreeCell rewards foresight, not speed.
- Keep your free cells empty as long as possible; they are your most precious resource.
- Work to empty a whole column — empty columns dramatically increase how many cards you can move at once.
- Don't send cards home too early if they could still help order the tableau.
- Free the Aces and low cards first so the foundations can get going.

Is every FreeCell game winnable?
Almost. The vast majority of deals are solvable; only a tiny number are not. With careful planning you can win nearly every game.
How many cards can I move at once?
It depends on your free cells and empty columns — roughly (1 + free cells) doubled for each empty column. The game works the limit out for you.
What is the goal of FreeCell?
Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, each built Ace to King by suit.
Is FreeCell free to play?
Yes — free, with no sign-up and no download, right in your browser.
